Mexico takes World Cup team gold in historic win
Medellin - Sunday, July 21, 2013
The Mexican men won their first-ever World Cup team gold medal, while the Indian women brought the gold home for the first time since 2011.
Mexico claimed its first gold in the recurve men’s team final. Top qualifiers Juan René SERRANO, Luis Eduardo VELEZ and Luis ALVAREZ
capitalised on two difficult first ends by Malaysia to take a commanding lead, and won the match 209-203. “We are very emotional. It is the first time that we’ve emerged as winners in a match for gold,” commented SERRANO. This victory confirms the progress of the Mexican men’s team, as evidenced by their fourth place finish at the Olympic Games. Malaysia’s Atiq Bazil BAKRI, Haziq KAMARUDDIN, and Asian champion Khairul Anuar MOHAMAD gave their country its fourth team silver in World Cup history.
In the bronze medal match, Olympic silver medallists Brady ELLISON, Jake KAMINSKI and Jacob WUKIE of the United States were the heavy favourites against Canada. It was mission impossible for the Canadian team, who has never defeated its neighbour in more than 10 years and was shooting for its first World Cup team medal in this category. The USA led from the start and won the match, 218-209.
Top-seeded China was the favourite going into the women’s final against India. In their eleven encounters throughout the last 10 years, China has led the victory count 7-4. However, Olympic team silver medallists XU Jing and CHENG Ming, together with Antalya winner CUI Yuanyuan, lost the final on a disastrous first end, which started with a miss (33 points). Rimil BURIULY, Bombayla Devi LAISHRAM, and world N°3 Deepika KUMARI
claimed victory by a fifteen-point margin, offering India their first World Cup team gold since Shanghai 2011.
The United States easily won the bronze medal match after Mexico failed to score any end above 50 points. Khatuna LORIG, Michelle GILBERT, and Miranda LEEK outscored their opponents 207-196, winning their first World Cup team medal since their bronze at Ogden 2012.
