China’s new star CUI clinches two gold medals
Antalya - Sunday, June 16, 2013
The recurve individual and mixed team finals concluded the Antalya World Cup this afternoon. China’s CUI (main photo) was the star of the day with two gold medals, in the women’s individual and the mixed team events, and Olympic champion OH Jin Hyek confirmed his supremacy over the recurve men’s category.
On Antalya’s Konyaalti Beach, China’s CUI Yuanyuan (No 4) made an impressive debut on the World Cup circuit. In the final, she was not intimidated by her formidable opponent, YUN Ok Hee (KOR/2), who was Olympic team champion in 2008, World Championships team gold medallist in 2009 and World Cup Final winner in 2010, and who won the Shanghai World Cup last month. The 20-year-old Chinese athlete took the lead from the first end for a victory 7-1. The bronze medal match featured two of Korea’s finest archers: Olympic champions KI Bo Bae and JOO Hyun Jung, who won the team gold medal together in the morning. After a tie at 3-3, KI took the lead and never looked back, for a 6-4 win.
Olympic champion OH Jin Hyek (photo) added a second victory to the gold medal he won last month in Shanghai. He defeated Juan René SERRANO 7-1 in the men’s final. With silver, the Mexican Olympian claims his first World Cup podium finish since taking second place at the World Cup Final in 2007. For the bronze medal match, 24-year-old ZHANG Jianping (CHN/19), shooting in his first World Cup season, took the lead from the start against London Olympic team champion Mauro NESPOLI (ITA/13), and easily won the match 6-2.
In the mixed team final, KI and LEE Seungyun, top individual qualifiers, faced second-seeded China. CUI Yuanyuan and XING Yu led at the halfway mark, but Korea came back, and the two teams were tied before the final two arrows. Korea shot 10-9, followed by 10-10 from China, the first arrow being just on the line. With a score of 152-151, CUI claimed her second gold medal of the day. In the bronze medal match, Mexico’s Aida ROMAN and SERRANO, fourth in Shanghai, faced the duo of Naomi FOLKARD and Ashe MORGAN from Great Britain, the fourteenth ranked mixed team. Mexico trailed after one end, but came back to take the lead. In the final end, after three hesitant arrows, SERRANO needed an 8 to win, and he delivered, making it a bronze medal win for Mexico.
This concludes the second stage of the World Cup. See you in July in Medellin for the third stage!
