British Inter Spinal Games held at Stoke Mandeville

British Inter Spinal Games held at Stoke Mandeville

Lilleshall (GBR) - Wednesday, May 21, 2014

From 7 to 11 May 2014, Stoke Mandeville hosted the Inter Spinal Games in Great Britain, an annual multi-sport event for those who’ve suffered recent spinal injuries.

This year over 80 participants took part from 13 different Spinal Units. The units attending were from all over Britain including Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. A lot of the success of these games and other similar events in Britain is mainly due to Wheel Power and their staff.

The sports represented include archery, athletics, wheelchair fencing, wheelchair basketball, table tennis, tennis and shooting. Individual medals are given to the winners and also to the Units gaining most points from all the sports. Glasgow was the winning Unit this year but competition was fierce.

In archery the first day was spent in instruction and practice, followed the next day by practice arrows leading in to the competition. Due to high participation, each competitor shot 12 scoring arrows. The standard was exceptionally high, with many scoring over 100 points and the top scores coming in between 113 to 115.

On the last day the UK’s Minister of Sport for Disabilities Mike PENNING attended – and paid a flying visit to the various sports. It did not take much persuasion for him to have a quick go at archery after being impressed by the scope of the day, and he did well.

The idea of these Games is to ‘transform lives through sport’. It is the same philosophy put forward by Sir Ludwig GUTTMANN, who encouraged participation in sport when he took over the Spinal Unit at Stoke Mandeville in the 1940s. Sir Ludwig’s ideas were revolutionary at the time and instrumental in the birth of Paralympic Sport. Archery was one of the first of those sports.
