Lausanne - Thursday, July 11, 2013
Dutchman Peter ELZINGA posted another record-breaking performance on 7 July 2013 at the Netherland’s Nationals in Almere. His score of 352 at 90m beat Dane Martin DAMSBO’s old world record of 350, and he finished the day just one point shy of upping his own FITA Round world record with a score of 1418.
Peter started archery when he was only nine years old. His father, an archer and coach at the local club, and mother – who competed at the 1995 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham (GBR) – convinced him to give shooting a recurve bow a try. Within a week of shooting Peter knew compound was the way he wanted to go, so switched disciplines.

Peter’s first international competition was the 1996 European Junior Cup in Baarschot (NED), where he also won his first international medal, in the team competition. Seven years later he arrived in the big league, at the New York (USA) 2003 World Archery Championships. And in that same year he recorded his first, but certainly not last, FITA Round score above the 1400 barrier.

In 2004, he won the European Championships in Brussels (BEL) and the Roverto (ITA) European Grand Prix. And later the same year, he broke the world record at 50m – posting a score of 357 – while rising to the top of the rankings, and becoming world number one. (He is currently ranked 11th in the world.)

When the World Cup was launched in 2006, he was part of the winning team at the third stage in El Salvador and qualified for the inaugural individual Grand Final among the ancient Mayapan Pyramids in Mexico, where he finished second. Then in 2007, it was bronze at the Indoor World Championships in Izmir (TUR), before adding the title of European Champion with his team at Vittel (FRA) the year later. Another World Cup team victory followed at 2009’s third stage, held in Antalya.

That season, in 2009, was one of career highlights, as ELZINGA added three new world records to his portfolio. Most impressively, he pushed the mythical FITA Round barrier up to 1419 points – up from Roger HOYLE’s (USA) previous best of 1414, shot in 2001 – during an international tournament held in Purmerend (NED), after heavy persuasion from his wife to even attend the shoot, since it was such a rainy day. With hindsight, he is very glad she did!

In the same event, the Dutchman also beat the world record at 70 metres, scoring close to perfect 358 points (out of 360). And a few months later, he increased his 50m record to match his 70m mark, 358 again. In total, including this month’s new 90m performance, ELZINGA now holds four world records!

Besides the records, his most recent achievements are an individual bronze and team silver medals at the 2010 European Championships, and a silver medal in the mixed team event of the 2011 World Championships in Italy. In 2012, he became mixed team European champion and finished third in the men’s team event.

For the last 10 years, Peter has been a leading archer in the Dutch team, a position he has achieved with hard work. He does not regard himself as naturally talented archer, but rather "a grinder having gotten his skills out of pure hard work".

As well as his career as an athlete, Peter ELZINGA runs his own pro-shop, Elzinga Archery (http://www.elzingaarchery.com/), from a location in the heart of the Netherlands which features a short range at 18 metres.
