Singapore is the second of four stages in the 2013/14 Indoor World Cup, which started in Marrakesh last month. Over 220 archers from 24 nations made the trip to this weekend's Asian leg. Recurve women and compound men shot qualification and their first elimination round this morning before the recurve men and compound women did the same in the afternoon.

Recurve women

After 60 arrows of qualification at 18 meters, all five Korean recurve women in the tournament lay in the top six of the rankings. Only DEVI Bombayla from India could challenge the Korean team's supremacy: she finished the ranking round in third. The top four women all broke the 580 mark, out of a possible 600 points. DEVI's Indian teammate superstar Deepika KUMARI posted a score of 562, good for ninth, some 25 points behind leader KIM Yu Mi from Korea.

No surprises in the 1/16 elimination round. All the top-seeded women advanced through to the next stage, and tomorrow's competition.

Compound men

Compound men's qualification was a true battle of 10s. Fifteen arrows in, two men were tied at a maximum 150 points. Points were dropped soon after, but three men kept a clear lead ahead of the pack. World Archery Champion Mike SCHLOESSER (NED) led on 298 at halfway, with United States archers Steve ANDERSON and Reo WILDE both one point behind with 297 points.

SCHLOESSER shot a perfect 300 second half and pulled away. It was good enough for a 598 total and the top seed, ANDERSON scored 595 to take second and 593 got WILDE third. Norwegian competitor Njaal AAMAAS came fourth and Cecilio QUEVEDO from Mexico ended the session in fifth.

"The long trip from home yesterday didn't bother me much," said Mike SCHLOESSER after his impressive round. "I had a great night's sleep. Woke up a little early but felt well rested!" It certainly showed in his first match. Another nine 10s and a straight-score victory in the first round put him in good shape for tomorrow's 1/8 elimination. He will be joined by the rest of Singapore's top seeds, who avoided upsets in the first head-to-head stage.

Recurve men

Longtime rivals - and friends! - Brady ELLISON (USA) and Frenchman Jean-Charles VALLADONT traded blows as they tried to stay ahead of each other in the recurve men's qualification top spot. In the end they had to share it, as both scored 589.

Numbers three and four, Jayanta TALUKDAR (IND) and Denis GANKIN (KAZ) also finished tied, two points behind the leaders with a total of 587. Australian archer Ryan TYACK completed the top five, with 584 points.

Lots of straight-set victories saw most of the higher seeds through the dangerous battlefields of the first elimination round. As the smoke cleared, though, they were not without casualties. Thomas AUBERT (FRA), winner of the first edition here in Singapore, was on the receiving end of a surprise shoot-off loss to local Singapore archer Justin NG.

Compound women

Linda OCHOA led compound women's qualification from start to finish. The Mexican top gun shot consistently: 294 for her first 30 arrows and 295 over the second half for a 589 total and the top seed. Erika JONES (USA) took a close second, just one point behind OCHOA but a respectable difference ahead of the rest of the field.

Her United States teammate, Christie COLIN (USA) scored 578 for third, ahead of Albina LOGINOVA from Russia on 571 and Rosalio DOMINGUEZ (MEX) with 570 points. The top five watched the first matches from the back of the room, comfortable with their byes into the 1/8 elimination stage tomorrow.
